# Slippery floors and a senior dog: simple ways to add grip

For a stiff older dog, a hardwood hallway can feel like ice. The fix is often cheap, and it starts with looking at your floors from the dog's side.

## Why hard floors are a problem

VCA says hardwood, laminate and tile are harder for dogs to walk on securely, and dogs that have fallen or have mobility concerns often walk cautiously with a short stride and a hunched back. That posture can add stiffness and soreness. The AKC adds that slippery surfaces can even erode an older dog's confidence.

## Add grip where your dog actually walks

VCA suggests non-slip area rugs and runners where the dog spends the most time, with no raised corners or edges that could trip them. The AKC suggests a yoga mat or anti-slip rug pad on slippery floors and in front of food and water dishes. The RSPCA also recommends a rug or carpet on smooth floors. VCA says short nails and trimmed fur between the toes improve traction too, and a vet or rehabilitation therapist can advise on nail caps or boots.

Take a slow video of your dog crossing different floors and note which one makes the stride shorter. Dated clips and notes are easy to show a vet.

## Stairs, beds and bowls

VCA says stairs also need a non-slip surface, such as a carpet runner or grip tape, and a ramp with good traction helps outdoors. Your vet may advise avoiding stairs, in which case a baby gate can help. For rest, the AKC suggests thick, supportive beds, and VCA prefers a bed your dog does not have to climb onto. Raising bowls to between elbow and shoulder can make drinking easier.

## Keep everything within reach

The RSPCA suggests keeping food, water, toys and bed easy to reach, and a quiet resting place away from boisterous pets and visitors. It also says to talk to your vet if your dog has trouble getting up or climbing stairs, as treatments may help.

## After you change the floors

Jot down whether your dog now crosses the room more steadily, with the date and what you changed. In PawLine, dated notes make it easier to compare.

## Questions about this guide

### Are rugs enough for a slipping senior dog?

Rugs help, but VCA also lists nail length, stair surfaces, bedding and bowl height. Ask your vet if the slipping is new or getting worse.

### Should I carpet the whole house?

VCA says carpeting everything is an option, though more realistically runners and rugs where your dog spends the most time can work, as long as they do not slide or curl.
